Community News for July/August

whatsnew.jpg

Wow, what an exciting two months! There is so much to cover.  Actually, there is too much cover and I can’t possibly to it justice in one post!  Instead, I’ll split it up into multiple posts as I catch up on all the great development that has been going on.  A big thanks to all the contributors for sharing their work with the community!

Templates

Templates are quickly replacing extensions as the preferred means to share functionality between users.  What I like so much about templates too is that they allow you to see and modify the code easily to fit your needs without having to touch external files.

Ajaxified Wiki.Tree (by blakeh)

If you ever wanted a version of the wiki.tree() function that shows your site hierarchy with dynamically-loaded, collapsible nodes, wait no more!  This excellent template allows you to do exactly that.

Collapsible Wiki.Tree (by neilw)

This template provides also a collapsible variant of the wiki.tree() function.  However, it does not require additional communication with server by eagerly loading the entire page tree.

Dynamic Table (by blakeh)

If you want your tables to be sortable, paginated, and searchable as you type then this template is exactly for you.  Built-in jQuery, this template creates beautiful striped, interactive tables.

Styled Page Buttons (by neels)

This template makes it easy to embed custom styled buttons for your site.  Simple, but effective.

Apps

While templates encapsulate reusable functionality, apps use templates to weave a complete user experience.

Bug and Issue Tracker (by blakeh)

Do you need a simple issue tracker for you project managers or an request system for IT support?  If so, check out this app which allows you to easily create pages through a submission form, which also acts as a dashboard view.  Since this app is built as a template, you can easily deploy it for each department or project on your site.

Blog App (work-in-progress) (by blakeh)

This template generates a blog-like front-page with the latest posts, comment, and edit tracking.  Check it out and leave BlakeH feedback or provide improvements if you can.

Integration

AWStats on Windows 2008 (by blakeh)

AWStats is a tool for collecting visitor statistics, such as what search terms were used; how many pages were viewed; what were the top pages; most common browsers used; and more.

Citations Plug-in (by Matt Bailey)

This editor plug-in allows users to insert a footnote and its reference via a single dialog.

Migration

Twiki Importer (by Tim Hunt)

This contributed migration script allows you to import your existing twiki pages into MindTouch.

Documentation

Keeping up with documentation is always a chore and the following individuals deserve a big hug from everyone.

French (help needed) (by bizzz) and Korean (by nikejam) and

Bizzz and Nikejam has done an excellent job at translating the documentation to French and Korean as well as localizing MindTouch.  Unfortunately, bizzz has informed me that he won’t be able to put in the hours anymore he used to and has kindly asked for others to follow in his foot steps.  Many thanks to both for their hard work!

So what didn’t I cover?  In short, a lot!  There are another dozen contributions that deserve mention and I will do so in another post.  In the meantime, check out these great community contributions and make sure to leave positive feedback for their authors when you come across them on the forums.  Thanks!

Want to get involved? It’s super easy. See a mistake on a page, edit it! Have a cool script to share, post it! See a question you know the answer to, answer it! Speak another language, help us translate to it! Found a bug, report it! :)
